Resolved

Resolved

            Forgetful, in exile,

in the fires of failure,

honouring suffering

like a story told in form,

a totem-working of visual permanence.

            I bore my marriage

to the joyous wilderness in one hand,

and sacrilegious duty

in the other.

            Today, I join these hands

to create stability, sanctuary,

creativity touching ground and discipline.

I burn the dead wood, releasing

my prisoner-identity and climb out of

the fishnet into deep fulfillment like

into a valley with a lake and untamed

foliage all around.

The pull and tug of two lives is gone,

tension internalized as useful energy,

as something to be incorporated, harnessed,

the generator of a mature dream – a dream

with no division, bound,

and happy to be bound.

Interlude

Interlude

.

Upon the window’s sill

I saw a ghost walking

of a young woman veiled in grief

with sunset hair and moral eyes –

her death drifted to me like

a scent. I called to her, with

overflowing sympathy, but the grave

was now her bed and the enemy-world

was her heart’s betrayal. I saw her sit

then look to the sky, her tormented forehead

glistening as the rain did on the roof’s old shingles.

She spoke three names softly, and over and over their

sound ripped my skull as if the sun itself had entered

to burn all hard-held secrets out.

I loved her like someone I had long known and understood,

watching her, hardly visible

as the rain pushed on.

You are wrong

You are wrong

You are wrong as the emptiness

that fills the space after rejection –

monotonous and monotone, a faker in the flesh.

Once taking up a whole continent in mind,

you were the designated bearer of sunlight.

I cared for your wrists, your pulse, the offspring

of your brilliance. I stood beside you, always a little lower,

maybe sterile, never enough. It was that voice that weighed

inside of me holding a gravity of its own, glorifying

even the cold intake of breath after words, your words

that meant more to me than memory, that wore into me like

acid painted on my skin, scorching, welcoming because

they were harsh and indisputable. But now

I exile you from my soul.

Your spring cleaning is death to my desire.

You are wrong and flat and you

don’t smell the same. You exist, but only as a chair does

or a house full of boring furniture. You have two

feet, still standing, but I imagine nothing hidden in your eyes –

what I see is beyond my attachment, easy now

to walk away from.
